Chairman Meeks’ Statement on Bombing at Kabul Airport

Washington, D.C. – Representative Gregory W. Meeks (D-NY), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement today after reports that ISIS-K terrorists detonated multiple explosive devices throughout Kabul, including one at Hamid Karzai International Airport, killing dozens of people including several U.S. servicemembers:

“I condemn in the strongest possible terms today’s terrorist attacks in and around Hamid Karzai International Airport which resulted in the death of Afghan civilians, as well U.S. servicemembers who are risking their lives to ensure the safe evacuation of U.S. citizens and our Afghan partners. I send my deepest condolences to the families of all those killed today.

“Today’s attacks further emphasize the dynamic and dangerous situation our men and women in uniform and our diplomats are facing in the midst of this unprecedented evacuation.

“I urge all American citizens remaining in Afghanistan who wish to leave to ensure they have registered with the Embassy, follow the instructions provided, and stay away from the airport gates to allow for an expeditious securing of the airport and the important work of these evacuations to resume as quickly as possible.

“I remain focused on the safe evacuation of Americans and our Afghan allies from the country and will continue to closely monitor developments on the ground.”
