Comer: OSC Confirms President Can Deliver Acceptance Speech from White House

Published: Aug 12, 2020

WASHINGTON – House Committee on Oversight and Reform Ranking Member James Comer (R-Ky.) issued the statement below on the Office of Special Counsel’s advisory opinion stating that the Hatch Act does not prohibit President Trump from delivering his Republican National Convention acceptance speech on White House grounds.

“In response to a request from Chairwoman Maloney, the Office of Special Counsel confirms President Trump can use the White House grounds to deliver his acceptance speech. The law plainly states that the President is not bound by the Hatch Act but Democrats continue to deflect, deter and undermine every lawful action President Trump takes rather than focus on the work Americans expect of their elected representatives. Truth be told, Democrats should be comforted knowing that the President can deliver his acceptance speech from home since they are so concerned about him traveling for events these days.”

The OSC’s advisory opinion states “the President and Vice President are not covered by any of the provisions of the Hatch Act. Accordingly, the Hatch Act does not prohibit President Trump from delivering his RNC acceptance speech on White House grounds.” Read the opinion HERE.
