WASHINGTON – Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Rodney Davis (R-IL) and House Committee on the Budget Ranking Member Steve Womack (R-AR) sent a letter to Dr. Keith Hall, the Director of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) requesting that the agency provide a cost estimate, commonly known as a ‘score,’ for H.R. 1, the For the People Act.
Following a recent announcement by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that she intends to advance H.R. 1 this month, Ranking Members Davis and Womack wrote:
“Members on both sides are concerned about what this all-encompassing legislation could mean for their individual districts and states… there have been numerous provisions identified that could easily have long-term cost implications.”
The Committee on House Administration is set to hold a markup on H.R. 1 on Tuesday, February 26 at 1:00 p.m. despite not yet receiving the CBO score. Davis and Womack added:
“To help Congress ensure that the American people are well-informed, we request the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) provide a cost estimate of the bill as soon as possible. The newly-elected Majority has stated on multiple occasions their intention to produce legislation with openness and transparency. However, they have continued to move forward with consideration of legislation without the knowledge of the costs, leaving the American public and the people they elected to represent them in the dark. This is not how significant policy proposals should be considered in Congress.”
