Engel Statement on State Department’s Report on Holocaust Restitution

Washington—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement on the State Department’s report on the JUST Act:

“Time is of the essence as we work to bring Holocaust survivors and their families the justice and accountability they deserve. I was proud to support passage of the JUST Act, which led to this State Department report, the first ever U.S. government examination of Holocaust-era property restitution issues. Countries must be held accountable for fulfilling their commitments to address the legacy of the Holocaust. This report makes it clear that far too many European countries still have not met their commitments to Holocaust survivors and Jewish communities to provide restitution or compensation for property that was wrongfully taken from them. As Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, I’ll continue pushing for full restitution for Holocaust victims and their families. It is imperative that we work to address this dark chapter in human history by facilitating the restitution of Jewish property.”
