Engel Statement on Upcoming Ukraine Elections

Bronx, NY—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement:

“As the second round of the presidential elections in Ukraine approaches, it’s important to reaffirm the strong bond between Ukraine and the United States.

“Since the onslaught of Russian aggression in 2014, the people of Ukraine have shown extraordinary strength, resolve, and commitment to unity, democracy, and the right to choose their own future. I have seen these qualities in the Ukrainian people and its leaders first-hand. That’s why I’ve long supported Ukraine’s ambitions for western integration through membership in NATO and the European Union. It’s also why I have pushed for robust foreign assistance to Ukraine, championed non-recognition of Russia’s claims over Crimea, and urged tougher sanctions on Russia, Putin, and his oligarchs as long as their aggression against Ukraine continues. Russia’s 2014 assaults on Crimea and the Donbass are not Ukraine’s first experiences with Russian belligerence and likely not the last. So it’s as critical now as ever that the United States, NATO, and the EU continue to support Ukraine’s aspirations for greater freedom and to advocate for the defense of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“I wish Mr. Poroshenko, Mr. Zelensky, and all the citizens of Ukraine the best as this important election goes forward. Whoever wins, I am confident that we will continue to strengthen U.S.-Ukrainian relations, deepen Ukraine’s integration into the West, and work together to help the people of Ukraine achieve the bright future of freedom and prosperity they have fought for and deserve.”
