Washington, D.C. – Committee on House Administration Chairperson Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) issued the following statement after Senate Democrats introduced S.1, the For The People Act, today:
“The For The People Act is the most significant democracy reform legislation since the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This sweeping good-governance package will protect the right to vote, ensure the integrity of our elections, hold elected officials accountable, and end the era of dark, special money in our politics.
“Republican state legislatures are working overtime to roll back voter protections and enact suppressive new voting laws just months after Americans navigated inconsistent, restrictive voting laws and stood in hours-long lines to turn out at the polls in record numbers during the 2020 election. Congress has the authority and an obligation under the Constitution to act urgently to protect the right to vote and assure voters their ballots will be counted as cast, regardless of their state of residence or zip code.
“I applaud Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senator Jeff Merkley, and Senator Amy Klobuchar for introducing S. 1 today, and for working to build support for this crucial bill. Building on the House’s success in passing H.R. 1 earlier this month, today’s introduction moves us one step closer to sending this landmark legislation to President Biden’s desk. Our democracy depends on it.”
H.R. 1, the For the People Act, passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 220 – 210 on March 3, 2021.
This legislation, introduced by Representative John Sarbanes (D-Md.), is a sweeping package of the most transformational pro-democracy, anti-corruption reforms in a generation. For more information about H.R. 1, the For the People Act, click here.
