Washington, D.C. – Chairperson Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) issued the following statement today on the eleventh anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. FEC:
“Today marks eleven years since the Supreme Court struck down longstanding campaign finance laws and opened the floodgates to unrestricted campaign spending by anonymous donors. The 2020 election underscored – once again – the urgent need for campaign finance reform as corporations and special interests spent unprecedented levels of dark money.
“Americans across the political spectrum are calling for a government that works for them and answers to them, without needing to be the highest bidder. As Chair of the Committee on House Administration, I look forward to answering their call and working with my fellow House Democrats to pass H.R. 1, the For The People Act and end the dominance of dark money in politics.”
