McCaul Slams Biden Administration’s Weak Action on China’s Continued Support of Russian Aggression in Ukraine

Washington, DC – The U.S. government has announced that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is providing support to Russian military efforts against Ukraine. In response, the administration has placed multiple Chinese companies on the Commerce Department’s Entity List, but chose not to impose financial sanctions that would meaningfully stop those companies’ ability to do business internationally. In April of this year, State Department Deputy Secretary Wendy Sherman assured the House Foreign Affairs Committee “if China in any way shape or form provides material support to Putin…there will be consequences.” In response, House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul (R-TX) issued the following statement.

“Deputy Secretary Sherman promised ‘consequences’ if the CCP provided ‘material support’ to Russia, but the administration’s feeble concept of ‘consequences’ will do little to deter the CCP’s ongoing support for Putin’s war crimes. Providing ‘continued support of Russia’s military efforts’ should result in significant sanctions on those offending companies is astonishingly weak, and could further the threat Russia poses to Ukrainian civilians and soldiers.”
