Washington D.C. – Today, Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX), Lead Republican of the Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement about President Trump’s new sanctions on the Office of the Supreme Leader of Iran and leaders of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC):

Lead Republican McCaul: “The President deserves credit for responding to Iran’s aggression with measured restraint after downing an American military aircraft flying over international waters. These new sanctions on Iran’s Supreme Leader and his most-trusted associates are well-deserved, and will further isolate those responsible for Iran’s destabilizing activities from the financial resources they need to carry out acts of terror and aggression.

“I appreciated President Trump inviting me and the other bipartisan national security leaders to the White House last week to discuss potential responses to Iran’s attack. I shared with the President my support for a measured, thoughtful response, and believe his actions today meet that goal. These additional sanctions make clear that President Trump and his national security team are intent on maximizing all efforts to hold the Iranian regime accountable until they come to the negotiating table. I urge Iran to end their campaign of aggression and instability.”
