Meeks Issues Statement on the 2021 NATO Summit in Brussels

Washington, DC – Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Chair of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today released the following statement on the 2021 NATO Summit held in Brussels, Belgium:

“This year’s NATO Summit represented more than just 30 democratic allies coming together to discuss shared interests, threats, and challenges. Today’s Summit – following the G7 – was an opportunity for President Biden to demonstrate to our transatlantic allies and to the world that the United States is back and ready to lead. The United States reaffirmed its commitment to collective defense and to the democratic values that serve as the foundation of the alliance; commitments which the former president’s America alone policies undermined.

“The outcomes of the Brussels Summit make clear that the NATO alliance stands ready to adapt to a new and multifaceted threat environment – including not only actors like Russia and China, but also cyberattacks, climate change, global health issues, and other critical elements of NATO’s 2030 transatlantic agenda.

“Going forward, I fully support President Biden’s efforts to encourage members to make greater commitments on protecting democracy and the rule of law within NATO and beyond.  We must work together to find a role for NATO in promoting and preserving the values on which the alliance was founded.”
