San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement marking the 84th anniversary of Social Security, which was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 14, 1935:

“Eighty-four years ago, in the midst of the Great Depression, President Roosevelt signed Social Security into law and boldly affirmed our nation’s sacred promise that retirement would never again result in enormous financial distress for American families.  Since 1935, Social Security has ushered in transformational progress for the American people, allowing millions of seniors and hard-working families to live with dignity, security and independence after a lifetime of hard work.

“Yet, for decades, Social Security’s bedrock guarantee has been under dire threat from Republicans determined to recklessly privatize this critical, life-saving initiative.  The deficit-exploding GOP Tax Scam for the rich added about $2 trillion to the nation’s debt, undermining our ability to fund key priorities like Social Security and Medicare into the future, while the Republicans’ radical special interest agenda has undermined the health and financial security of millions of Americans, raising the price of prescription drugs and quality health care and sending the cost of living soaring to unsustainable levels.  While America’s seniors and families struggle beneath this growing burden, Republicans continue their relentless work to enrich the wealthy and well-connected at the expense of hard-working Americans.

“House Democrats are taking decisive action to oppose the Republicans’ disastrous special interest agenda as we fight For The People, to lower the cost of health care and the price of prescription drugs, raise wages by rebuilding America’s infrastructure and clean up corruption to ensure our government works for everyone.  As we mark this important anniversary, we will continue to advance progress for all Americans, and reaffirm our lasting commitment to safeguarding the promise of Social Security, now and for generations to come.”
