Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after House Democrats passed a package of four public safety bills:
“Today is a day of important progress on one of House Democrats’ top priorities: building safer communities. With the robust public safety package that we passed today – rooted in Democrats’ cherished values of safety and justice – we take a strong step to prevent crime, save lives and advance justice.
“Our Invest to Protect Act, led by Congressman Gottheimer and strengthened by CBC Chair Beatty, funds our police: helping small, local law enforcement agencies retain and recruit officers. Importantly, this bill invests in strong guardrails, including training for de-escalation and nonlethal force, responding to substance use disorders, and supporting survivors of domestic violence. Passage of this legislation is a victory for safety and accountability – advancing our shared goal of public safety for all.
“Thanks to the leadership of Representatives Porter, Horsford and Demings, we also passed three strong bills to help build stronger, healthier relationships between law enforcement and those they serve. These bills all save lives: Congresswoman Porter’s by sending unarmed mental health professionals to respond to mental health crises, Congressman Horsford’s by investing in effective and evidence-based community violence intervention, and Congresswoman Demings’s by ensuring that police have more tools to solve violent crimes and advance justice for victims.
“House Democrats believe that every American deserves to live in a safe community – where they and their family can thrive. This public safety package is the latest manifestation of our Majority’s commitment to putting People Over Politics, building safer communities for all and honoring our oath of office to protect and defend.”
