Pelosi Statement on the 49th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement marking the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade:

“Today, America marks nearly half a century since the courts resoundingly affirmed the Constitutional right of every woman to have the freedom to make her own decisions about her body, health and family.  Roe v. Wade stands as a pillar of health freedom for every person, but today, this historic victory now faces its most alarming threat in decades from right-wing forces, including in state legislatures and on the Supreme Court.

“In states like Texas and Missouri, radical Republican lawmakers have enacted draconian abortion restrictions that threaten to inflict catastrophic damage – especially on low-income women, members of the LGBTQ community and women of color.  And, after shamefully permitting Texas’s flagrantly unconstitutional SB8 to proceed through a cowardly, dark-of-night ruling, the Supreme Court stands poised to potentially strike a devastating blow to the Constitutional right to choose when it rules on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization later this year.

“In the face of this all-out assault, together with so many courageous advocates, House Democrats are leading the charge to defend reproductive freedoms.  In September, the House passed Congresswoman Judy Chu’s Women’s Health Protection Act, which would ensure every person can make their own health decisions and which must be enacted immediately.  Congress also applauds the Biden-Harris Administration’s strong leadership in creating the Task Force on Reproductive Healthcare Access, a strong step to help more Americans access these essential health services.  Democrats are united in our belief that every woman, everywhere has the Constitutional right to basic health care.  As we mark this momentous anniversary, let us renew our pledge to never relent in defending health freedom across our nation, wherever and whenever it comes under threat.”
