Pelosi Statement on the Retirement of Congressman Jim Cooper

San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement after Congressman Jim Cooper of Tennessee announced that he will retire at the end of his term:

“Congressman Jim Cooper has been a dedicated public servant and a gracious colleague during his more than three decades in the House.  When he retires at the end of his term, his constituents and the Congress will miss his long-standing leadership in the House.

“A lifelong Tennessean, Congressman Cooper has always been willing to reach across the aisle to deliver for his beloved home state, especially as a former co-chair of the Blue Dog Coalition.  During the COVID-19 crisis, he has proudly brought billions in federal funding home to help families and businesses in his district, including through bipartisan relief efforts and our American Rescue Plan.  While serving on the Committee on Oversight and Reform, he was relentless in investigating the Army Corps mistakes that contributed to the devastating Nashville floods – and in 2020, he authored a law that could pave the way to improved flood management for the city.

“As Chair of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee of the Armed Forces Committee, he has been a champion of our national security and a force for the future: leading the charge to bring our military into the 21st Century by enhancing our capabilities in space.  As a Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, he has been a leader in keeping our country safe, our forces protected and our intelligence superior.

“For his ironclad commitment to respect, civility and service, Congressman Cooper has gained many admirers on both sides of the aisle, as well as among his former staffers and interns.  On behalf of the House, we thank him for his leadership and wish him all the best as he prepares for his next adventure.”
