Ranking Member Jim Jordan (R-OH) opposed unconstitutional measures to erode the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding American citizens.
During the House Judiciary Committee hearing last week, Jordan’s opening statement highlighted how the Democrats’ hodgepodge bill does nothing to address school safety or the violence that occurred in Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo, New York: “No one wants another tragedy. No one wants this to happen again. That’s why it’s regretful that Democrats have rushed to a markup today in what seems more like political theater than a real attempt at improving public safety or finding solutions.”
Later in the hearing, Jordan exposed the Democrats’ true agenda:“Let’s be honest, they’ve told us what they want to do. Their real beef is with the Second Amendment…what this bill does is it tells law-abiding citizens when you can get a gun, what kind of gun you can get, what accessories you can get for your gun, and where and how you have to store it in your own darn home. That’s what this bill does. This is an assault. This is the start. We know it’s the start because Ms. Jackson Lee, the first person to speak on their side, said this: ‘We’re not finished.’ This is just the beginning. Their goal, plain and simple, is to get rid of the Second Amendment.”
Jordan continued: “We should come together in a bipartisan way to figure out what we can do to help make schools safe, make sure that people are properly trained there, [and] make sure the facility is the way it needs to be. We’re all for that… We’re not for taking away Second Amendment liberties…like they want to do.”
While speaking during a leadership press conference on Wednesday, Jordan reiterated Democrats’ real goal: “Make no mistake, the Democrats’ efforts today and tomorrow are to destroy the Second Amendment. You don’t have to take my word for it. You can just listen to what they said. Joe Biden, the President of the United States said it’s time to get rid of the most popular handgun in this country. Michael Moore said it’s time to repeal the Second Amendment. Sheila Jackson Lee in our 10-hour markup last Thursday said if this bill passes, we’re not finished. They want to do more. They want to take away people’s Second Amendment rights.”
On the House Floor on Wednesday, Jordan blasted Democrats’ attack on First Amendment and Second Amendment rights: “For 18 months, Democrats have assaulted the First Amendment. Shouldn’t surprise us now that they’re coming after the Second. Every right we enjoy as Americans under the First Amendment: your right to practice your faith, your right to assemble, your right to petition your government, freedom of the press, heck, some of them call for outlawing certain networks and freedom of speech. Just a few weeks ago, the Biden Administration tried to put together the disinformation governance board…The attacks on the First Amendment have been sustained. They’ve been going on for 18 months and now here they come going after law-abiding citizens’ Second Amendment liberties.”
During debate on Thursday, Jordan slammed red-flag laws and expressed concern for due process rights for Americans: “Time and time again, Democrats say this is not a violation of due process, not a violation of our constitutional rights. It most certainly is. Remember the basics here: someone doesn’t like you, they file a complaint. There’s a hearing within 24 hours. A hearing that you’re not allowed to attend. You’re not allowed to be there to face your accusers. The government takes your gun or guns. Several days later, there’s a real hearing. Well, a real hearing with a lower standard. The burden of proof for the government is not beyond a reasonable doubt to deny you your constitutional right. It’s a clear and convincing standard. So we lower standards to take away your fundamental liberty when you didn’t commit any crime. If that’s not a violation of due process, I do not know what is.”
