WASHINGTON, D.C. – Kentucky Congressman John Yarmuth, Chairman of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement on the release of President Trump’s budget for Fiscal Year 2020:
“President Trump’s budget once again lays out an irresponsible and cynical vision for our country, without any regard for its human cost. It lacks foresight and would leave our nation unable to meet our obligations to the American people, provide for our economic and national security, or responsibly plan for our future. It does this all to protect deficit-financed tax cuts for millionaires and wealthy corporations while continuing to ask the American taxpayers to provide billions of dollars for a wasteful border wall the President promised would be paid for by Mexico. Given the important budget hurdles we face this year that will require bipartisan and responsible solutions, the President’s budget proposal is a dereliction of duty.”
NOTE: Despite the Administration’s claims, the President’s Budget proposal actually cuts non-defense discretionary spending limits by 9% from the FY19 levels. It keeps the FY20 cap at the austerity level of $543 billion (Table S-7).
