Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi held a photo opportunity with His Excellency Sauli Niinistö, President of the Republic of Finland, and Her Excellency Magdalena Andersson, Prime Minister of Sweden, ahead of a trilateral bipartisan leadership meeting. Below are the Speaker’s remarks:
Speaker Pelosi. Good morning, everyone. It is such a great honor to welcome two champions of liberty and democracy and security to the Capitol of the United States. Mr. President, Madam Prime Minister, you’ve come on a day fraught with meaning for us when it comes to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. As we gather here, the United States Senate is taking up the legislation passed by the House last week to send $40 billion in security, humanitarian and economic assistance to Ukraine. Your courage as a result – responding to the Russian invasion has been a lesson and a model to the world.
As Speaker of the House, it’s my honor to offer the fullest support and endorsement to your request to be a part of NATO, the greatest defense alliance in the history of the world. You have always worked in a multilateral way for peace and democracy and prosperity. Now, it will be more formal as a member of NATO. So, thank you. Thank you for your leadership. And it’s my – as we leave this meeting, we’ll have a bipartisan meeting of Members of the House to extend – of the Leadership – to extend support to Finland and to – and to Sweden. Right now, though, I have the honor of yielding to the distinguished President of Finland, President Niinistö.
