Transcript of Speaker Pelosi’s Remarks at Bill Enrollment Ceremony for the Inflation Reduction Act

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats held a bill enrollment ceremony for the Inflation Reduction Act.  Below are the Speaker’s remarks:

Speaker Pelosi.  Hail to the Chief, to Joe Biden.  He – just his leadership, his vision, his inspiration made today possible.  Thank you, Mr. President.

[Applause]

Congratulations to the Senate for sending us this bill in an expeditious manner.  Thank you, Chuck Schumer.  Wonderful.

[Applause]

Just thank you, thank you, thank you – to the Members, the Chairs of Committees and to the staff.  Let’s hear it for the staff.

[Applause]

They work so hard.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful to know what the idea of a weekend is, or a dinner at home or something?

This is historic, and it is cause for celebration.  And all of our Members know that.  That’s why they’re here – right, Steny?

Majority Leader Hoyer.  Yes.

Speaker Pelosi.  This is something quite remarkable.  And I know what probably one of the happiest people here – not – if she is – Kathy Castor.

[Applause]

The leader of our Climate Crisis Select Committee.  In any event, this is something very special for the American people.  From the kitchen table to the Arctic Circle, they are – families are protected, or affected, whether it’s the cost of prescription drugs, lowering the cost of prescription drugs at long last.

[Applause]

At long last.  How long have we waited for this day to come?  How long we had fought for it.  And, again, the subsidies are another way –

[Applause]

The subsidies to make health care affordable – can keep it affordable for many more families.  So, from that standpoint, it’s so remarkable.  When we talk about health, we have to talk about the health of our children – clean air and clean water.  And that’s what the climate crisis legislation is about.

[Applause]

And it reduces the national debt, and it is paid for.

[Applause]

And it’s paid for.  It reduces the deficit.

So again, we’re putting People Over Politics.  I salute all of our Members.

Just as a matter of history, just a little trivia – more than trivia.  This is historic, because every Member in the House and every Member in the Senate – Democratic Member in the House, Democratic Member in the Senate, voted for this legislation.

[Applause]

To lower prescription drug costs, to lower health care costs, to reduce the deficit and paid-for to lower inflation, to save the planet – and every single Republican in the House and in the Senate voted against it.  How could they vote against lowering prescription drug costs?  How could they vote against helping families with their health care costs?  How can they vote against the planet, Mother Earth?  Mother Earth gets angry from time to time, and this legislation will help us address all of that.

But I’m so proud, because so much of this bill began in the House.  Again, it was a collaboration with the Senate.

[Applause]

All of our Members.  It’s really, really, really a cause – a cause for great celebration.  It’s important to note this, and then I’ll sign it.  It’s important to note this.  There has been a stranglehold on this on this Congress, whether it’s [Big] Pharma, in terms of prescription drugs, whether it’s the fossil fuel industry, in terms of the climate issues, whether it’s the gun industry, in terms of gun violence prevention being held up.

We have given the American people breathing room from that stranglehold.  We have given them leverage.

[Applause]

We have given them leverage in terms of gun violence prevention, in terms of addressing the climate crisis, and again, having the Secretary negotiate for lower prices.  So with gratitude to all, it is now my honor to sign the enrollment.

[Applause]
