Washington, D.C. (October 8, 2021)— Today, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, issued the following statement after Maple Island Inc. issued a voluntary recall of three lots of its Parent’s Choice Rice Baby Cereal that it manufactures for Walmart. Walmart’s decision comes a week after the Subcommittee released a staff report showing that Walmart weakened its arsenic standard:
“I am pleased to see that Walmart’s dangerous infant rice cereal is being recalled. But I take no pleasure in being right that infant rice cereal presents a continuing danger for babies, and continues to test high in toxic heavy metals. As a parent, the findings of my Subcommittee’s investigation have been alarming. The baby foods industry has a long way to go to regain the trust of American families, and taking tainted products out of circulation is a small, but important first step. It is well past time for the rest of the baby food industry to stop selling infant rice cereal if it cannot make it safe.”
